If you’re coming from New England, it’s easiest to get yourself to New London and take a ferry across to Long Island. Drive in or take public trans (there is an Amtrak station immediately adjacent) to the ferry terminal in New London, CT.

Make a reservation ASAP on the Cross Sound Ferry from New London to Orient www.longislandferry.com. You may leave your car in a garage in New London if you wish to travel on foot and save money on the ferry ticket, but you should know that it’s about 9 mi. from Orient Point to Greenport, which is where you need to catch ferry #2 to Shelter Island. There is a bus: s92 (see the route PDF here), that runs every hour so it is quite possible to take public transportation all the way from New London to Shelter Island. Once in Greenport, follow “from Greenport” directions below.
